About 400 relatives of jailed islamist extremists demonstrated in front of the Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman on Tuesday. These Salafist activists called for the release of detainees held on terrorism-related charges.
They raised black banners urging King Abdullah to pardon their relatives while chanting “The people want to bring down the government. We want the rule of the Quran.”
Many Salafist scholars, known as tafkiris, an ultra-conservative branch of Islam, are in prison. The demonstrators claimed that the authorities are holding individuals without fair trials.
One of them is Mohammad Shalabi, currently serving a 15-year term for his alleged participation in 2002 riots in the Southern town of Ma’an, which have been perceived as among the worst public disturbances in the Hashemite Kingdom over the last 10 years.
This year again in January, the Southern Bedouin town saw the outbreak of anti-government riots. The violence was triggered by the murder of two members of rival Bedouin tribes. It has been reported that about 500 rioters set fire to government buildings and cars while smashing shop windows. Eyewitnesses told international media that the police used tear gas to disperse the protesting crowd.
Several Salafist scholars have renounced violence since the 11 September attacks in the United States. Many, however, keep on promoting aggression .
